Hi, may name is Tony Bennett and I have been in the remodeling industry for decades. One thing I can tell you, unequivocally, is that painting a home exterior takes time and has to be done EXACTLY right or it simply will not last. Look, painting the exterior of a home is both a science and an art. It requires a keen eye to know what is going to work aesthetically… but it also requires a ton of knowledge to know what is going to work in reality.
Let me explain.
Ever wonder why you are having to repaint your home so often? Well, it’s probably because of the type of paint you are using, the lack of proper preparation or a mistake in proper application. You see, there is a lot of things that can go wrong with a home exterior paint job. From inter-coat adhesion failure, right down to the premature failure of your caulking, it can all result in a lousy paint job that you are going to hate – and be reminded of every time you pull into your drive way.
For example, did you know that if you use the wrong cleaner, primer or paint you can cause an inter-coat adhesion failure?
Inter-coat adhesion is an industry term that is used to explain the bonding process that MUST occur between your primer and your paint. When paint does not bond properly, it peels off easily…PERIOD.
Inter-coat adhesion failure is time consuming and expensive to fix. In short, inter-coat adhesion failure is caused by two paint products not bonding.
Most of you have probably heard that you cannot apply latex paint over oil without the proper prep. But this same rule applies if your using water based paint directly on oil based paint without sanding and/or the correct primer. Bottom line: your paint will start peeling and blistering almost immediately. Same thing goes if you attempt to apply a low sheen paint over a glossy paint without sanding, it will peel. As you can see, it can get pretty complicated if you don’t know what your doing.
That is why you simply can’t trust your home to just anyone. The science and formulation of painting has changed dramatically. What works great on one home could be a disaster waiting to happen on another. Like I said…it’s a science. You must know exactly what you are doing and then you must do it…perfectly.
